Outturn check: is the shortage large enough for a protest?

Compare the bill of lading weight with the outturn weight at discharge. You see the difference in tonnes and percent, and whether the shortage reaches the threshold at which a protest is warranted. Choose vegetable oil or chemicals, or enter your end customer's threshold.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a protest for a cargo shortage?

A protest (letter of protest) is a written notice that you dispute the quantity or condition of the cargo. It preserves your right to file a claim later.

Does the threshold also apply to a surplus?

No. The tool only assesses a shortage, so an outturn above the B/L weight gives no protest advice.

Is the threshold always the same?

No. The tool suggests 0.5% for vegetable oil and 0.3% for chemicals, but the end customer sets the threshold. Choose Own threshold and enter the value from your contract or instruction.
